When Schubert's music for piano is performed using historical instruments, it is typically played on a 6- or 6 1/2-octave model from the early 19th century, such as by Streicher, Fritz, or Graf. Here we experimented with an earlier setup. Stimulated by the drawing of Schubert's room in Wipplingerstrasse by Moritz von Schwind, I played on a copy of a 5-octave Walter piano.
